Business Overview

National Bank Independent Network (NBIN) is the premier provider of trading and custodial services to Portfolio Management (PM) firms across Canada, carrying broker services to IIROC registered Introducing Broker (IB) firms, and trading and custodial services to Prime Brokerage (PB) and Investment Fund Management (IFM) firms.

Nature of the Role and Contribution

The Senior Advisor will manage new projects and business initiatives in order to ensure that NBIN complies with the applicable regulation and best practices. The senior advisor will provide support as an expert in regulatory compliance and will participate actively in the implementation and maintenance of NBIN regulatory compliance program.

The Senior Advisor will report to the Senior Manager of NBIN Risk.

Key Accountabilities

  • Review documentation provided by regulatory bodies both domestically (IIROC, OSC, CSA) and outside Canada (FINRA, SEC, UK); industry associations (IIAC, PMAC); legal and accounting firms; and CRA. 

  • Gain a thorough understanding of new and proposed regulations to assess impact to NBIN and NBIN Client firms (IB, PM, PB, IFM and MFDA)

  • Prepare NBIN position papers and/or comment letters in respect of proposed changes to existing and possible new regulations. 

  • Work with industry groups such as PMAC and IIAC on various initiatives they may be managing to assess these changes in regulations.

  • Provide internal support as a Subject Matter Expert in implementing new regulatory projects.

  • Assist in developing a value-add regulatory offering for NBIN Client firms. Prepare presentations for PM and IB firms on at least a quarterly basis covering recent regulatory changes to provide direction/advice with respect to NBIN’s interpretation of current and proposed regulations and legislation.

  • Develop internal resource of regulatory updates and provide support to NBIN Service and Sales teams. Provide monthly summary for NBIN Senior Management of all regulatory initiatives.

  • Work with both internal partners and external stakeholders to resolve and work through regulatory issues at a detailed level.

  • Provide support to Risk Team in the oversight and analysis of operational risk items including Business Continuity Management, Privacy, Fraud, Cybersecurity and Operational Loss reporting.


Competencies required
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 7+ years’ relevant experience within the financial brokerage industry

  • Strong understanding of the Regulatory and/or compliance environment within Canada and related experience

  • Sound knowledge of NBIN products and services offered to Portfolio Management and Introducing Broker firms as well as good understanding of the Introducing/Carrying and Custodial business

  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills

  • A strong team player and collaborator

  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, strong problem solving and decision-making skills

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office programs such as Excel, Word and Powerpoint

  • Bilingualism, both spoken and written (English and French) is a strong asset but not required
